“No one was out there?” Louise asks, perplexed, when I tell her what Forest found out.

“I don’t know, but there is no Cottonwood County animal control. The River Bend animal control is going to investigate. Did you find anything out when you called Peak Valley animal control?”

She shakes her head. “They said they didn’t know anything.”

“And they didn’t tell you there was no Cottonwood County animal control?”

“They said they weren’t aware the county had an animal control department…” Louise frowns.

“Then why didn’t you call me and tell me as soon as you found out?” I rub my hands over my face.

“I was trying to find the number,” she justifies, completely oblivious to the trouble her actions have caused.

“I think we need to see this as a learning opportunity. When someone calls about an abandon animal, we need to get more information and we need to direct them to animal control.” I take a seat on the edge of Louise’s receptionist’s desk.

“Okay…” Louise nods, though her body language tells me she doesn’t agree.

“Is everything okay with you? You’ve seemed more edgy lately.”

“Everything’s fine.” She presses her lips together when Forest walks through the door.

“Do you know if it was one of the Kearney brothers who called?” Forest asks, his eyes on Louise. I don’t know why he’s asking Louise about the Kearney brothers. I thought we put them behind us.

“Excuse me?” She jerks her head back.

“Do you know if it was Lance or Carl Kearney who called asking for Locklyn’s assistance at Weeping Willow Ranch?” Forest asks again, taking a step closer to the reception desk, his eyes full of held back rage.

“I… I don’t know who called,” Louise stutters, and I’m not sure if I believe her. I know she has a soft spot for the Kearney brothers, but I don’t think she would intentionally put me in harm’s way.

Forest doesn’t immediately respond, and he doesn’t take his eyes off her. “I hope that’s true.” He tears his eyes off Louise, aiming them at me, the rage still there but not directed at me. “Can we talk in your office?”

“Yes, of course. Come on back,” I say and lead him to my office, feeling the tension radiate off him. When we go inside, he closes the door before pulling me into a tight embrace. “What was that about it?”

“Lance is out of jail,” he says, resting his head against mine.

“What?” I try to pull back, but he tightens his hold and all I can do is return his embrace, feeling the tension in his muscles as I run my hands up and down his back.

“He was charged with simple assault and battery. A misdemeanor with probation and no jail time,” Forest shares and I’m even more confused.

“I thought this was his third strike?”

“I don’t know how he keeps slipping through the cracks with nothing but a slap on the wrist,” Forest grunts out.

“Oh, my gosh… do you think he asked Louise to send me out there?” I ask, my blood going cold.
